Weekly Dance Practice

The household hosts a dance practice every week, with instruction provided by Master Lorenzo and occasional guest teachers. Anyone is welcome to attend, especially those new to the SCA or historical dance.

Dance practice is currently on hiatus. If you are local and interested in getting things going again, please email Lorenzo.

The practice is held in the cafeteria at the Odyssey Charter School at 14 St. John Circle, Newnan, GA.

Practice begins at 7:00 PM every Thursday evening.

Directions

Take your best route to I-85 south of Atlanta. Get off at Exit 47 (Hwy 34/Newnan) and go west on Hwy 34 (Bullsboro Dr.). Turn right at the first light (at the RaceTrac station) onto Amlajack Blvd. Take the third left onto St. John Circle (at the Yokogawa sign). The school will be on your right. Google or GPS directions may be slightly different.

What Will We Be Doing?

The primary goal of this dance practice is to become familiar with some of the basic historical dances and dance styles popular in the SCA. A selection of the dances that we will concentrate on can be found here. Information on more dances (including music, choreographies, and links to original sources) can be found at the Renaissance Dance Database.

What Should I Wear?

You can wear whatever you want, though some clothing will make dancing easier or more enjoyable. Comfortable shoes are recommended, ideally with leather soles. Heavy boots or sneakers may make dancing more difficult. Ladies may wear long skirts if desired. Period-appropriate historical clothing is, of course, always welcome, though certainly not required.

Do I Need To Bring A Partner?

Many (but not all) of the dances we will do require a partner, but we will choose new partners for each dance, and you are encouraged to dance with many different people. If you have a particular person you are more comfortable dancing with, feel free to bring them along. Depending on attendance, you may be called upon to dance the part of the opposite gender (usually ladies dancing the men's part).

Do You Need Musicians?

We have recorded music for the vast majority of dances that we are likely to do, but live music is always welcome. If we have enough musicians attending regularly, we may be able to make use of another room for dedicated musician practice.

Can I Bring My Kids?

Children 12 and older are invited to join the dancing. If you have children younger than that, they are welcome to attend as long as you have a non-dancing adult to watch them.
